Cameras need light to capture an image properly. This section will look at kinds of light and quality of light. Light sources can be divided into two groups: specular light sources, reflected light sources and diffused light sources. Each type presents special characteristics. Light sources can also be either natural or artificially created (strobes, floods, etc.) | (Contains 11 photos)
Composition is the way we organize pictorial elements in the image. General themes or styles include: four quarters grid model, repetition and isolation. These concepts can be applied to any situation whether it be a landscape or a family photo.
You can see the effect of depth of field (DOF) on the composition of a photo. A narrow DOF, when using a wide aperture, such as f 1.4, isolates a subject through focus. Wide DOF, when using a narrow aperture such as f 16, puts more of the image in apparent focus.

Cameras today are very complex tools. With endless features, dials, buttons and menu items to wade through, they can be very intimidating to figure out. There is no easy answer to this one except to say that the basics of aperture, shutter speed, ISO setting, lens focal length and focus haven't changed. This portfolio will look at some key strategies to consider with the latest cameras. |
